The hypercar enthusiasts went wild after the McLaren’s Speedtail teaser images surfaced way back in March 2018.
But now, the hybrid hypercar has entered production as the hypercar has finally finished its last testing phase where it set a new speed record.
Recently the Mclaren announced that it had completed the final testing phase of its new 3-seat grand touring hybrid, the Speedtail. The hypercar hit a top speed of 250 mph more than 30 times on separate top speed trails at Kennedy Space Center runway in Florida. The hypercar had undergone tests earlier in many locations including Papenburg in Germany and the Applus+ IDIADA Proving Ground in Santa Olivia, Spain.
The prototype named XP2 wreaked havoc on the 3 -mile long tarmac runway meant for landing space shuttles.
The hypercar is all set to become the fastest production car built by McLaren till date. Earlier the title was held by the famed F1 which was capable of achieving a blinding top speed of 372km/hr from the time when it was launched in the year 1994. The man behind the wheel of the hypercar was McLaren’s chief test driver Kenny Brack. The hypercar is believed to carry a price tag of Rs. 16.2 crore which showcases the company’s expertise in lightweight engineering. The car stands at 5,137mm in length that makes it the longest production car from the McLaren stables.
On the occasion, the McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said, “The Speedtail is a truly extraordinary car that epitomises McLaren’s pioneering spirit and perfectly illustrates our determination to continue to set new benchmarks for supercar and hypercar performance.”
Although the exact specification of this new speed monster is still under wraps but it is strongly believed that the car will be powered by a petrol-electric powertrain which combined will give a monstrous 1070 bhp of peak power. McLaren claims the hypercar carries a battery pack that has a power density of 5.2kW/kg which gives it the best power-to-weight ratio. The Speetail hypercar has now officially gone into production at McLaren’s Woking factory. The delivery of the 106 cars already sold is slated to begin in February 2020.
