The much-awaited 2021 Mercedes S-Class made its world premiere digitally today. This flagship model of Mercedes gets a revised exterior and a completely new interior cabin. The luxurious car is likely to be launched in the Indian market in the second half of 2021 in long-wheelbase form.

The front fascia of the new S-class flaunts LED headlamps that feature the ‘Digital Light’ system. In addition, there is a chrome-heavy grille with three horizontal blades along with a new front bumper with larger air intakes. The rear end boasts of wraparound LED tail-lights that has been placed beneath the thick bar of chrome running from one end to another. The twin chrome-finished exhaust tip gives a sporty feel to the car from behind. At the side, the model gets flush-fitting door handles. 

Talking about the interior features then the main highlight of the cabin is the second-generation MBUX infotainment system. On the dashboard, there is a 12.8-inch tablet-style OLED infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument display. There are two screens mounted on the front seatbacks and one armrest mounted tablet. The car also gets a voice control feature that is available in 27 different languages. Another feature highlight is the rear-axle steering system. This feature turns the rear wheels of the car by up to 10 degrees in the opposite direction of the front axle when parking, and by up to 4.5 degrees in the same direction as the front axle. Furthermore, the new Mercedes S Class comes equipped with a plethora of features. These features include fingerprint, face, and voice recognition to automatically adjust settings inside the car, and gesture controls for operating the sunroof. The seats of the SUV comes with greater connectivity. Passengers can share media files with one another by using a drag-and-drop function. Also, calls can be easily transferred to a person in a specific seat. The ambient lighting system employs 263 LEDs, a head-up display with augmented reality, along with an Interior Assist function. The SUV also gets a 31-speaker Burmester 4D surround-sound system. 


In terms of safety features, there is a center airbag that prevents the driver and front passenger’s heads from colliding in case of an accident. The model also gets a Pre-Safe Impulse side function that lifts the car up by 80mm when it detects an impending side-on crash.


Under the bonnet, the new S-class will get a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol & diesel engine options with various state of tunes. Talking about the petrol engine, then in S 450, it will deliver 367 bhp power and 500 Nm torque. While in S 500, the engine will bell out 330 bhp power and 700 Nm torque. There will also be a 48V ‘EQ Boost’ mild-hybrid system that can provide as much as 22 bhp power and 250 Nm torque in short bursts.  


The 3.0-litre diesel engine in S 350d will generate 286 bhp power and 600 nm torque. While in  S 400d, the engine will produce 330 bhp power and 700 Nm torque. All the variants get a 9-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Also, except for S 350, all the models get 4MATIC all-wheel-drive as standard.
