At the Indonesian Motor Show, Toyota unveiled its Rangga compact pickup concept, which previews the pickup truck that will sit below the popular Hilux. Despite its name, the Rangga is essentially an updated version of the IMV 0 concept shown in Thailand last year. It takes its inspiration from the Japanese word "Ronggo", which means a strong, tough hero.

What exactly is the Toyota Rangga concept? This concept vehicle is built upon the derivative of the ladder-frame IMV platform, which also underpins other Toyota models such as the Innova Crysta and Hilux. Despite Toyota's introduction of the modular TNGA-F ladder frame architecture, the IMV platform will persist for robust models, especially in emerging markets where cost constraints play a role. While specific dimensions for the concept haven't been disclosed by Toyota, it appears noticeably smaller than the Hilux.

The pickup concept shares several similarities with the IMV 0 concept, aside from the platform. It boasts a combination of boxy yet charming aesthetics reminiscent of the Compact Cruiser EV concept that was showcased earlier. Toyota has exhibited the concept in various body styles and has stated that it will function as a blank canvas for purchasers who wish to personalize their vehicle in line with their requirements.

Though Toyota hasn't disclosed the powertrain particulars at this time, considering the platform in use, it's reasonable to anticipate a rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration with options for petrol and diesel engines, and potentially an electric powertrain as well. The IMV platform is also capable of accommodating four-wheel drive (4WD), paving the way for the potential introduction of a rugged off-road model akin to the previously previewed Compact Cruiser, which was presented in electric vehicle (EV) form.
