Japanese automaker Toyota has decided to axe its entry-level cars– the Etios sedan, Etios Liva hatchback and Etios Cross due to the implementation of the latest BSVI emission norms that will come into effect from April 2020.

The company will halt the production of the Etios line-up soon. This would mark the end of 10-year long journey of the Etios sedan and hatchback that were introduced at the 2010 Auto Expo. It is due to the high investment involved in upgrading the cars that are preventing Toyota to continue production of the Etios line-up.

The fact that the diesel variants of the Etios line up fetch more sales number for the company that its petrol variants,

In fact 63% of Liva hatchbacks sold are diesel variants while 70% Etios sedans sold are diesel variants add up to cost of upgrading the old 1.4-liter D-4D diesel engine.

Toyota Etios Liva Specifications:

The Etios Liva is available in both petrol as well as diesel variants. The Diesel variant is powered by 1364 cc while the Petrol variant is powered by 1197 cc engine.

The gearbox is mated to a manual transmission and depending upon the variant the car gives a fuel mileage of 17.71km/L to 23.59 km/L. The Etios Liva measures 3884mm in length,1695 mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2460mm.

This is why Toyota has decided to pull plugs from the Etios lineup. The Etios car models are based on the EFC platform that meets the present-day crash test standards but fails on pedestrian protection norms. The pedestrian protection norms come with a price tag as it involves costly sheet metal changes and low volume demand won’t justify the investment.

Also, the EFC platform was built to last for an 8-year lifecycle which is well past beyond that mark.
